Hunger is The major issue in Nigeria
The issue in Nigeria most times is about filling the tummy and making sure that hunger is taken care of whichever way. But the reason is not far fetched.
Even at that, eating healthy and staying alive should not be compromised on the altar of consuming just anything.
The need to look after your health and body is also as import as the need to eat.
Mr. Ariel Ostad, a scientist at the American Academy of Dermatology rightly gave a list of 14 foods that could make you look older than your age.
1) Red meats
“Fatty meat generates free radicals”, says Dr. Ostad. Free radicals are molecules having one electron instead of two electron, which makes them unbalanced and prone to snag electrons from other molecules, thus turning them into unstable cells that will likely snag electrons from another cell etc. Free radicals slows down the ability of the skin to protect itself and generate collagen. Ostad suggests that lean meats such as turkey and chicken can be taken and to also consume large amounts of fruits and vegetables, rich in antioxidants.
2) Spicy foods
According to dr,Ostad, spicy food aggravates rosacea (blotches) and could do damage during menopause, when blood vessels in the skin are more reactive. You should not necessarily avoid consumption of spices, but it is advisable not to eat them if you don’t want to suffer from spider veins, puffiness and redness.
3) Energy drinks
They give you energy but they have an ageing effect on your teeth. If you really want to take an energy drink, make sure you sip it from a straw so as to to limit the contact between your energy drink and your teeth.
“Caffeine is like any other diuretic; it can make you excrete fluid, and deplete your body of moisture”, says Dr. Hirsch. “Anything dehydrating can dehydrate your skin, making your skin look dull and aged”.
apart from dehydrating your body because of caffeine, coffee also damages your teeth. “Acidic beverages can create microscopic pores on the surface of the enamel, causing erosion over time”, says McAndrew. In order not to avoid this beverage from your diet, which also has many positive effects on human health, it is recommended to drink a glass of water after drinking a coffee. “Water has a neutral pH, which washes away the acidic substance”, says McAndrew.
6) Sugared lemon juice
According to experts, lemonade could damage the enamel of your teeth. make sure to always sip a mouthful of water after drinking lemonade, wait at least an hour before lifting your toothbrush, then don’t add sugar to your lemon juice so as to avoid tooth plaque.
7) Black tea
People who drink black tea often can have stained teeth due to the high tannin content. However, a study published in the Journal of Dental Hygiene reveals that the casein found in milk reduces the risk of the tooth staining, while the citric acid contained in the lemon makes your enamel more porous and your teeth more vulnerable to stains.
When people consume more sugar that can't be synthetized by their cells it leads to excess sugar molecules bond with proteins and trigger a process that can affect the skin collagen (the protein that keeps the skin elastic and youthful). Also, sugar damages the teeth there by causing tooth decay and discoloration.
“When your liver is functioning well, toxins that could potentially affect the skin are been neutralized naturally through your body. But if the toxins build up in your liver, and they don't undergo a break down properly, your skin can begin to develop issues and different reactions, like acne, sallowness, and wrinkles,” says Dr. Ostad. Alcohol dehydrates the body, therefore it is also bad for your sleep. “Inadequate sleep can cause your skin to wrinkle, uneven pigmentation, and reduced skin elasticity”.
10) Charred meat
Black chars on grilled meat contain pro-inflammatory hydrocarbons, which could cause the skin collagen to be damaged, dr,Ostad explains. You don’t necessarily need to stop taking barbecuing, but, in any case, you should make sure you scrape off the black chars and clean the grill when you’re finished.
11) White wine
White wine can damage your enamel and stains your teeth. make sure you don't brush your teeth immediately after drinking white wine (or any other acidic drink). you brush already acidic teeth which would encourage the erosion of your enamel. “You need to give your teeth time to re-mineralize after being covered in an acidic beverage”, said Maureen McAndrew of the New York University School of Dentistry. “I’d wait an hour after drinking before before brushing my teeth”
12) Salty foods
Salty foods retain water and cause a “puffy” look. It is advisable to season your food with little salt and go for fresh foods compared to preserved or pre-cooked foods.
13) Processed meat
Sausages, bacon, Vienna sausages and so on. “Many of these meats contains sulfites and other preservatives, which can trigger the inflammation in the skin, and increase the appearance of aging”, says Dr. Ostad. They also tend to contain large amounts of salt which retains water.
14) Trans fats
Apart from being harmful for the heart, trans fats also cause your skin to age. “They promote inflammation in the skin”, says Dr. Ostad. They could even make your skin more vulnerable to UV rays. It is better to avoid products that contains hydrogenated oil on the label.
